He feels the sudden emergence of the Ryans Christie and Fraser and Callum McGregor as first-choice picks, coupled with the continued improvemen­t of Andy Robertson, has put the national team in a good position.

“We have struggled to break that cycle of failing to qualify for tournament­s,” he said. “It gets tougher every year. But I think Alex is doing a decent job. We needed some good results and positivity and that is what we have now got.

“Bournemout­h have done an incredible job with Ryan Fraser. To buy him from Aberdeen for £400,000 and turn him into the player he has become is incredible.

“The same is true of Liverpool and Andy Robertson. Andy shows what can be achieved with ability, sheer hard work and a bit of luck. Whenever anybody down here is picking a Premier League XI he is invariably in it at left-back.

“Alex is in a good place now with Scotland. The squad is getting a little bit stronger and a bit younger. He just needs a run of good results to give the youngsters a bit of confidence.

“But the Nations League success was good for them. If they can keep the momentum going then I think they can qualify for Euro 2020 automatica­lly.”

Getting points against Belgium, the top-ranked team in the Fifa world rankings, and World Cup quarterfin­alists Russia and finishing in the top two of Group I won’t be easy. However, Hutchison believes it is possible.

“If they can become difficult to beat then I think they can get a win over one of the major footballin­g nations,” he said. “We are a country that has always had famous results on the road. We have beaten some big nations away. That is often when we are at our best.”
