Warehouses eyed up for new restaurants

- BY HOLLY LENNON

EMPTY warehouses in Tradeston could soon be given a facelift as two restaurants are looking to move in.

The ground floor space of a former light bulb factory at 136 Nelson Street has been earmarked for an eatery offering ‘flavours of the Caribbean’.

Dating back to the early 1900s, the three-storey property is at the heart of the warehousing district which is now undergoing regeneration.

A submission on behalf of the applicant, who currently rents the entire building and the lane access to it, states: “There are already a number of popular restaurants in the area and, whilst the area is not endowed with buildings of architectural importance, the presence of these restaurants and the honest fabric of the buildings which are echoes of the area’s past, all contribute to the ambience.”

“This site is particularly interesting in that it reflects news@ eveningtimes.co.uk the golden age of the Tradeston area with pends and alleyways adding to the dynamic thrust of the area.

“Whilst the building cannot be seen from Nelson Street, the access to the building via the pend will add an extra dimension to the experience.”

It adds: “This vacant building will be transformed into a quality restaurant which will add to the range of dining experiences available in the local area and to the city which is renowned for the culinary delights on offer.”

Only the ground floor is included in the application but there are thought to be future proposals to “generally improve the exterior”.

Elsewhere in Tradeston, an application has been submitted to turn the ground floor of 48 Tradeston Street into a restaurant as well.

A change of use from a warehouse/store to restaurant has been submitted to Glasgow City Council.

Plans include internal and frontage alterations and erection of a rear extension, erection of a gate and fence.

The finished product would have the capacity for up to 70 people.

Tradeston has been the subject of a number of development plans in recent months.

Plans include a massive build on Tradeston’s water front which was hailed as one of Scotland’s biggest ever construction projects.

A new modern quarter of the city will be created with housing, offices, bars, restaurants, a crèche and substantial public realm improvements.

It will cover some 1,250,000 sq ft of the neglected city centre zone facing the banks of the River Clyde and could bring billions to the city.
