Murray still confident Glasgow can overcome confidence crisis

- BY JOHN McGILL

GLASGOW assistant coach Kenny Murray admits Warriors’ confidence levels have taken a battering after three straight defeats.

Dave Rennie’s squad followed up their bruising double setback against rivals Edinburgh with a 20-17 loss to rejuvenated Italians Treviso on Saturday.

The timing could not be worse for the Scotstoun outfit as they look to keep their Heineken Champions Cup ambitions on track when Cardiff visit on Sunday.

However, defence expert Murray revealed Rennie has spent the days since their latest blow in northern Italy attempting to rebuild his Glasgow players’ fragile mindset.

He said: “It’s natural that confidence takes a hit after three straight defeats.

“We’re not used to losing three on the bounce so the guys are a bit down. But at the end of the day you’ve got to take it on the chin.

“No one is entitled to win games and you need to work hard to get anything in this game. This week has been about getting a bit of selfbelief back in what we’re doing. We just weren’t clinical enough in finishing those chances off.

“We know we’re creating good things on the pitch, we just need to be better at finishing them off.”

Victory over the Blues this weekend would certainly ensure Glasgow stop feeling sorry for themselves, especially if they can clinch the bonus point that would edge them towards the quarter-finals.

Warriors sit four points behind Pool 3 leaders Saracens – who have won all four games so far.

But unless they can take maximum points against Cardiff, their hopes of clinching a best runners-up slot could come down to their final game against the big-spending English outfit at Allianz Park.

“We’ve put ourselves in a really good position,” Murray said. “We’ve been building up to this game for a month.

“If we win but don’t get the bonus point we may have to get something from Saracens away but we’ve got a fantastic opportunity.

“We’ve only qualified once for the last eight but if we can do it again, combined with us sitting second in our PRO14 conference, then we’ll be in a really good position.”
