Pub aims to reopen one year after devastating nightclub fire

- BY HOLLY LENNON

A POPULAR pub is set to reopen a year after it was closed due to the Victoria’s nightclub fire.

Lauder’s Bar has set a provisional opening date for March after finally being given access to the property.

As previously reported by the Evening Times in September last year, the pub, which is situated next to the Pavilion theatre, said that the fire in March 2018 and subsequent demolition works has caused damage to both their roof and the gable end of the building.

The pub, which is owned by the same team behind The Horseshoe Bar and the Auctioneers in the city, also claimed it has been difficult to obtain building warrants.

Owners had planned to reopen in November after seeking approval from the city council in order to commence the works, but were held up by the ‘slow’ and ‘frustrating’ process.

They have now been given access to the site, more than eight months on, meaning builders are able to start construction work.

A statement posted on their social media explained: “We are working towards a date in March and even though it’s still a couple of months away, we have a light at the end of the tunnel. We can’t begin to explain how excited we are to hear this news and we can’t wait to get back open.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for all your support and we hope you will all be just as excited as we are. See you soon.”

The pub had to stop trading last year when a fire destroyed Victoria’s Nightclub on Sauchiehall Street.

At the height of the blaze, more than 120 firefighters and 20 fire engines were mobilised to the city centre to fight the fire.

Following a lengthy cordon, the building was eventually pulled down and the majority of businesses were able to return to normality.

Lauder’s has remained off limits as work to return to normality continues.
