Lustig looking for one more season at Celtic

MIKAEL Lustig hopes to spend one more season with Celtic before returning home to Sweden.

There is a clause in the right-back’s contract which if activated would allow him to stay for another

1 2 months in Glasgow.

The 32-yearold joined the club seven years ago and with 14 winners’ medals is the most decorated overseas player in the history of Celtic.

Lustig, who is vice-captain, was signed on a free by Neil Lennon and given his service and consistency, there have been few players in recent years to have given so much value to the Scottish champions.

Lustig was linked with AIK but he said: “I have a contract with Celtic and hope to extend this. The ball is with them. If they want me to continue, then I’ll stay here. If nothing happens, then we’ll see. Nothing is clear that we should move back [to Sweden], so then it might as well be something else abroad.

“I’m sure I’ll find something where I feel comfortable. The important thing is that it will be good for the family and also in terms of football. But I hope to remain in Celtic.” The Swede admitted the gap between his own team and Ranger is the closest it has ever been during all his years in Scotland.

However, he remains confident that if he is still a Celtic player then next season his team will be going for a record-equalling nine in a row.

Lustig said: “Rangers have made many signings and spent a lot of money. We and they have not been on quite the same level for a long time, if you look back.

“But you see what they achieved in recent times as the second-placed team in the league and it has started everyone talking a little bit about them.

“We feel like number one still and we feel very confident. We lead the league still and hope to take another title.”
