- BY CATHERINE HUNTER Local Democracy Reporter

A NEW health and social care hub developed in the East End of Glasgow is expected to open by 2023.

The state-of-the-art complex will be created at the former Parkhead Hospital site on Salamanca Street, across from the Forge Shopping Centre, and accommodate GP facilities, pharmacies and dental surgeries.

It will benefit the east end and north east of Glasgow and improve services by providing a fit for purpose environment for patients and staff.

Glasgow City Council has confirmed the site, which has strong public access links, has been identified.

Community consultations are ongoing and the public is expected to provide advice on what they want the hub to include over the coming months.

An update was provided to the Baillieston area partnership.

Barbara Adzajlic, of Glasgow health and social care partnership, said: “This hub will bridge together all the services in the area.

“We are building something new and modern which will make it easier for people to access the services they need.

“So far we have identified that we want to develop in Parkhead and are now designing the building. We also hope this will reduce the number of hospital admissions and improve areas like Parkhead and Shettleston.”

Services expected to be available at the hub include specialist children’s services (including advice for children’s mental wellbeing), rehabilitation services, district nursing, social work children and family teams, mental health services for older people as well as learning disability facilities.

Meeting rooms will be made available for peer and support groups as well as recovery cafes for those overcoming addiction.

Ms Adzajlic continued: “It will be more straight forward to access services if they are all in the one place.

“Public consultation has been ongoing since 2017.

“We will now as the community what they want incorporated into the design’s whether it be public transport or parking facilities.”

It is hoped the business plan will be submitted by January 2021 with services operating by 2023.
