Top Olympian reveals championship medals

- BY STEWART WARD

SCOTLAND’S top female swimmer revealed official championship medals as some of the world’s leading athletes prepare to descend on Glasgow.

Triple-Olympian Hannah Miley helped design the accolades for the LEN European Short Course Swimming Championships. Glasgow’s Tollcross International Swimming Centre will host the event’s 20th year from December 4-8.

Miley, who is an ambassador for the championships, said: “The medals will be something athletes from all around the world will treasure forever, and a great reminder of what I’m sure will be an amazing event in Glasgow.

“I’m so excited for Scotland to host another major international sporting event and can’t wait to see it all come to life over the next few weeks!”

The medals feature a ripple effect to give them a 3D feel, and have individual event titles engraved on each.

Scotland’s most successful Commonwealth Youth Games athlete of all time, Scott McLay, joined Miley to unveil the medals.

He praised their design: “The Commonwealth Youth Games medals I have are pretty iconic but I think Glasgow and Hannah have done a great job in the design of these.

“Having made my first GB senior team in the summer and seen a number of my teammates picking up medals, it has only stoked the fire even more and I’d love to get my hands on one of these in a months’ time.”

This will mark the first time Glasgow has hosted the championships.

It comes just a week after it was revealed that Glasgow had been successful in its bid to be named European Capital of Sport 2023 – the first city to take the title twice.
