Coke visit canned: Festive red truck in snub to Glasgow

- BY STACEY MULLEN

CHEEKY Coca-Cola has snubbed Glasgow by taking its popular Christmas truck tour to Edinburgh.

The city will not receive a visit from the famous red truck despite its popularity in Glasgow.

Instead Coca-Cola has chosen Scotland’s capital as the Scottish destination for this year’s UK tour with the truck due to visit Newcraighall Road on Friday and Saturday.

The tour schedule was published yesterday and includes a total of 19 stops nationwide with locations including Bristol, Newcastle, London and Portsmouth all receiving a visit.

The truck appears in Coca-Cola’s famous Christmas advert which includes the jingle, “holidays are coming.”

The advert was first launched in 1995 by the drinks firm and is broadcast in more than 100 countries to millions of viewers.

Known as ‘Christmas Caravans’, the illuminated lorries are made more enchanting with special effects by the world-famous Industrial Light and Magic, the company behind the Star Wars films.

Last year, the truck delighted festive revellers at Silverburn Shopping Centre in Pollok and Tesco Extra Rutherglen.

In 2017, the event was so popular at Silverburn that shoppers were stuck in a multi-storey car park for hours.

Silverburn said at the time they had been experiencing high volumes of visitors who were attending the Coca-Cola event.

The truck, which is covered with thousands of festive lights, has also been showcased at Asda in Robroyston and St Enoch’s Square during previous city visits.

Evening Times readers expressed their disappointment at the news on our official Facebook page – and even called for ginger rivals Irn-Bru to step in.

Andy Lundie said: “No Coca-Cola truck for us this year. Mon the Irn-Bru.”

Karen McVey continued: “Come on Barr. Get the finger out, would much prefer an Irn-Bru truck anyway.”

Other readers, however, claimed they would switch the Coke’s rivals.

Mark Crichton joked: “Boo! I prefer Pepsi anyway.”

Maureen McDade added: “My grandchildren will be gutted. Back to Pepsi Max for us lot.”
