Glasgow-inspired track makes Oscars shortlist
ASONG called Glasgow which featured in the film Wild Rose is in the running to win an Oscar. Glasgow (No Place Like Home) has been shortlisted for original song at the 92nd Academy Awards.
The film, written by Glaswegian Nicole Taylor, tells the story of a troubled young mum who dreams of becoming a country singer.
Irish actress Jessie Buckley, who also starred in Oscar-nominated Judy, took on the role of RoseLynn Harlan, while her mother was played by Julia Walters.
The movie soundtrack featured Glasgow (No Place Like Home) which was sung by Jessie at the end of the movie.
The song was written by US actress Mary Steenburgen who is best known for her roles in Elf, Step Brothers, Philadelphia and The Proposal.
She told a US publication that director Tom Harper needed a song for the film which expressed everything the character had went through.
She brought on co-writers Caitlyn Smith and Kate York, and Glasgow (No Place like Home) was born.
She said: “The song poured out of us.
“It would be titled after the character’s home town in the film: “Glasgow (No Place Like Home).
“The connection of acting and songwriting is that you’re telling stories.
“I can play characters that I could never play in a movie.”
The song was one of 15 to make the shortlist, which was announced this week.
A total of 75 songs were eligible for the category.
Glasgow (No Place
Like Home) will compete against the likes of Into The Unknown from Frozen II, (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again from Rocketman and Speechless from Aladdin.
Much of Wild Rose was filmed in Glasgow in locations including Maryhill, the
Old Fruitmarket and the Grand Ole Opry. Nominations for the 92nd Oscars will be announced next month on January 13, ahead of the ceremony on February 9.
