There’s no mandate to hold second referendum

-

IWAS appalled to hear Nicola Sturgeon claim that the General Election result was a mandate for another Scottish independence referendum, when in reality she has no mandate whatsoever for a referendum.

We already had one in 2014, which saw the No side winning and more than two million Scots voting against independence.

Nicola Sturgeon simply refuses to acknowledge or respect the result of the 2014 referendum and for that reason, Boris Johnson is right to reject her request to hold another and to pledge that any request to hold Indyref2 would be rejected with no negotiation.

Nicola Sturgeon constantly says the people of Scotland have a right to determine their future but we have already done this in 2014 by saying No to Independence and that should have been the end of the matter for a generation – as agreed at the time by the SNP.

There is no doubt that Scotland is much stronger and better as part of the United Kingdom and the people of Scotland should not be dragged into another independence referendum just because Nicola Sturgeon refuses to accept the result of 2014.

STEVEN Bradley (Letters, December 20) and other correspondents are on the usual anti-SNP rant state that Scotland is part of the UK and always will be.

I take it that they are perfectly happy with the situation that we always get the Westminster Government that the English vote for, no matter how right wing and extreme, like the current lot just elected, God help us.

Thank goodness not all of us have such a lack of vision for future generations who deserve a country which makes and lives with its own decisions and with its own government.

WITH all the hot air constantly coming from the First Ministers mouth about “Indyref 2” and “letting the people of Scotland decide their own future” , one thing I’ve never seen, even in the “once in a generation” referendum, is if Scotland would have to pay a divorce bill, similar to the one for leaving the EU ?

I wonder where all the funds for this and any other costs would come from. Maybe the North Sea oil? Maybe Scotch whisky? Maybe sales of tartan and shortbread ?

APPARENTLY all the local councils in Scotland are skint, and are dipping into their emergency cash.

Maybe they wouldn’t be so skint if they stopped wasting money year in year out, especially at the end of the tax year when the old “if we don’t spend it this year we won’t get it next year” mantra kicks in.

Things such as the

Billy Connolly murals all over the city or the proposed Nelson

Mandela statues are not needed, especially when the council are supposedly deep in the red.

Then there’s the small matter of food banks and potholes all over the city. Money should be given for viable projects only. Maybe then they wouldn’t be skint.

REGARDING the hotel to be built at Candleriggs. Let’s get this straight, this a students hall of residence not a hotel. It’s going to be built on prime land for student use, for those who pay no council tax to the city. It’s a joke.

CAN’T imagine many people wanting to stay there until the area gets a bit of a facelift.
