- BY STEWART PATERSON

ANURSE and a doctor from Glasgow hospitals have each been made an MBE in the New Year Honours list. Jennifer Rodgers is the health board’s Chief Nurse for Paediatrics and Neonates, based at the Royal Hospital for Children.

She was made an MBE for her services to nursing.

Since qualifying as a nurse in 1996, Jennifer began working at the old sick kids hospital at Yorkhill.

Her career progressed to her now providing professional leadership to more than 1000 registered nurses and more than 300 nursing support staff at the Royal Hospital for Children, Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Neonatal Unit, Royal Alexandra Hospital Neonatal Unit and The Princess Royal Neonatal Unit.

Jennifer praised her colleagues for their dedication on the announcement of her award.

She said: “It’s really humbling to receive this honour.

“It’s such a privilege to do this job and work with so many inspirational teams of nurses, doctors and the many other people that ensure patients and their families are well looked after.”

The health board made it double celebration with Dr Tara Quasim, who is based at the Royal Infirmary, also becoming a MBE.

She was recognised for her work with the InS:PIRE programme which helps patients recover after being in Intensive Care.

Dr Quasim also paid tribute to the team effort across the hospital.

She said: “I am delighted to accept this award on behalf of the whole InS:PIRE team and the patients who have hopefully benefitted.

“Many thanks to NHSGGC for its continued support of the programme, the Health Foundation and University of Glasgow who gave me the ability to help start this five years ago.”

The health board management was “delighted” with the recognition for the two staff members.

Jane Grant, Chief Executive, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, said: “I am absolutely delighted for both Jen and Tara who are being honoured in the 2020 New Year’s Honours List.

“Both are great role models for us all and it’s really well deserved.”
