Two illegal immigrants guilty over sex assault

- BY WILMA RILEY

TWO illegal immigrants were yesterday convicted of raping a 29-year-old woman in a Glasgow flat.

Griselt Maranaku, 33, and Elton Baga, 32, who is also known as Leo Baga, of Haughburn Road, Glasgow, were found guilty at the High Court in Glasgow.

The jury heard they forcibly removed their victim’s clothing, struggled with her and then both men, who are originally from Albania, raped her.

The sexual assault took place on January 8 and 9 last year, in a flat in Glasgow’s East End.

The court heard that the victim and a woman friend were having a drink in a pub when they met the two accused.

The victim thought she knew one of the men because he resembled an acquaintance who worked in a Glasgow chip shop. The women chatted with the accused and then the victim’s friend invited them back to her house.

At one point the victim went to her bedroom and the two men followed and raped her.

Her friend, who was still in the flat, called the police and they arrived to find the 29-year-old, who was distraught out in the street. Maranaku was still in the flat.

In evidence Maranaku claimed he had consensual sex with the woman. His co-accused said the victim had asked him to take part in a threesome. Both men denied raping the woman.

Both men are in the country illegally, but have submitted applications for asylum.

Judge Sean Murphy QC placed both accused on the sex offenders’ register, deferred sentence on them until later this month and remanded them in custody.
