Baker from Castlemilk wows at Euro event

- BY HEATHER CARRICK

ACASTLEMILK baker has reason to celebrate after scooping the bronze prize at the European Championships for cake decorating in Poland.

Magda Bianco, 35, travelled to Warsaw at the end of February with her mythical woodland inspired cake to represent Scotland in the competition, placing third.

Magda said: “I think it’s my biggest achievement because when I looked around the hall and saw all the work everyone else was doing I was like, ‘Wow, what am I doing here?’

“The level was really, really high and all the works were beautiful.”

The championship challenged bakers from all over Europe to show off their elaborate designs

Magda, who owns her own cake company, Polka Dot Cakes, even had to buy her showcase creation its own plane ticket to make sure the edible sculpture was not damaged in transit, before making the more fragile components in Poland.

She said: “The show cake for me was the most stressful part. I had to actually fly with this ginormous cake.

“I had to buy a plane ticket for the cake and take my sister and brother with me to help. I was travelling with six huge boxes on the plane, people were looking at me like I was crazy!”

Magda, from Poland, moved to

Scotland 14 years ago, and first began baking on her daughter’s first birthday – although that attempt didn’t go as well as her award-winning creation.

Magda said: “It was a disaster! But I told myself I wasn’t going to quit, so I looked at YouTube videos and taught myself

“All of my family live here now too, I only go back to Poland maybe once a year. It was nice to represent Scotland there. I think it has been my biggest achievement.”
