Fire crews fight huge tyre blaze

- BY ELLE DUFFY

ALARGE pile of tyres which the community warned were dangerous days ago have been set alight. Crews were at the scene in Drumchapel’s Dalsettar Drive just after midnight on Thursday, where a pile of tyres is thought to have caught fire.

Residents in the area were asked by police to keep their windows shut due to a large amount of smoke coming from the blaze.

We told previously how reckless fly-tippers left Drumchapel residents in “constant fear” of vandals setting hundreds of dumped tyres alight causing a massive “toxic” blaze.

Dozens of tyres piled on top of one another and masses of litter have taken over vacant land near to Garscadden House and Aldi on Garscadden Road for months.

Those living nearby fear the area is being used by a private company to dump their old tyres.

Residents have called for a complete crackdown to stop the area being “blighted” by the eyesores and to ensure the perpetrators are punished.

Drumchapel Community updated locals and urged people the scene.

They wrote: “This does not just put our emergency services at risk but also the grounds and buildings around about.

“Please possible.

“Police Scotland and Rescue Service present.”

Police confirmed no residential properties were under threat from the blaze.

A spokesman said: “The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service are dealing with a large fire in the area of Dalsetter Drive, Glasgow. No residential properties are at risk.

“There is a large amount of smoke being produced as a result and they are advising local residents to keep their doors and windows closed.” stay safe and
