Banned driver fled from cops at 100mph

A DISQUALIFIED driver raced away from police officers in a chase at speeds of up to 100mph less than a month after he was banned.

Belan Ahmed sped down Glasgow’s M77 and M8 as well as residential areas on August 31 last year.

The 25-year-old failed to stop for red lights and lost control of the Vauxhall Astra several times.

He is now behind bars after pleading guilty yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to dangerous driving.

Ahmed also admitted driving whilst disqualified having been banned on July 29 last year.

The court heard officers clocked Ahmed going at 50mph on Barrhead Road before accelerating on the motorway.

Officers flashed their lights and sounded their sirens ordering Ahmed to stop.

The driver moved between lanes at 70mph and undertook several vehicles.

Ahmed ignored several red lights in residential areas before crossing the Kingston Bridge at 50mph.

Prosecutor Cheryl Lyons said: “He had to brake severely entering a left bend which had an advisory speed of 30mph.”

Ahmed drove up a verge to pass static traffic and continued west along the M8.

He undertook two vehicles in excess of 90mph and drove on the hard shoulder to overtake more cars.

Miss Lyons added: “Once past these vehicles, the accused returned to lane one in excess of 100 miles per hour approaching junction two of the M77.”

Ahmed continued the race at 90mph driving across chevrons and on the opposite side of the carriageway.

The Air Support Unit of Police Scotland then tracked Ahmed heading into a dead end on Glenmuir Avenue.

Miss Lyons said: “He attempted to turn round and during this manoeuvre he reversed his vehicle into a fence adjacent to a house.

“Due to the houses, police made contact with the accused’s vehicle and brought it to a halt.”

Ahmed exited the vehicle and was arrested at the scene.

Lawyer Paul Sutherland, defending, said: “Mr Ahmed is abundantly aware given the driving that’s featured in this case and his record, a custodial sentence will be at the forefront of your lordship’s mind.”

Sentence was deferred until next month for background reports by Sheriff John McCormick, who remanded Ahmed, of the city’s Priesthill, in custody meantime.
