Calls for hand sanitiser rules for shoppers
SHOPPERS should be made to sanitise their hands before entering a store, a city councillor has said.
Cllr Paul Carey has urged the Scottish Government to make it a requirement for customers to disinfect their hands before going inside a shop, unless there is a medical reason against doing so.
T he Drumchapel/ Anniesland councillor added it should mandatory for large stores to have a sanitising station for customers.
He said: “I find that in supermarkets, where once the sanitisers were prominent, there is now suddenly a lack of urgency to remind people to hand sanitise.
“My local supermarket previously had sanitiser right at the front door, now it is stuck in a place where you would have to look for it.
“It seems to have gone from almost everyone sanitising their hands to what seems to be not many people doing it.
“There is no point in the Scottish Government going on about people not obeying the guidelines if we do not keep onto these large outlets.”
He also called for shops to be punished for breaches.
A spokeswoman for the Scottish Government said: “Our guidance makes clear that retailers should encourage customers to wash their hands by providing hand sanitation facilities at entry and exit points and in any common areas.
“To stay safe and protect others, everyone has a personal responsibility to minimise the opportunity for coronavirus to spread from one person to another, which includes regular hand washing. The guidance on the use of face coverings highlights that it may not be appropriate for some people to wear a face covering.
“No one should be abused or treated in an unacceptable way. Those exempt under the guidance and regulations do not have to prove their exemption.”
