Green light is given for new supermarket
AN ALDI food store can be opened in Govan after the city council gave planning a p p r o v a l t o t h e supermarket chain. The store, which will take over a site on the Junction 24 retail park, is set to create up to 35 jobs.
Plans submitted by Aldi state the development will bring “significant levels of new investment” – up to around £ 2.1m – into the area.
Glasgow City Council has agreed part of the existing retail units on Helen Street can be demolished.
According to a planning statement on behalf of Aldi, the proposals sought to “partially demolish the main retail terrace, removing the two smaller units occupied by ‘ That Party Place’ and ‘ B& M’, but retaining the three larger units currently occupied by B& M”.
The statement adds: “The aim of the development proposal is to provide a high quality, attractive new food store which will enhance the local area and provide a modern shopping environment, while working to reuse as much of the existing retail terrace as practicable.”
A car park, with 120 spaces, will form part of the development, and will include eight designated disabled bays as well as five for parent and child parking.
There will be two electric vehicle charging points and space for up to ten bikes.
Seven letters of support for the application were submitted to the council by members of the public.
The plans state: “The proposals are submitted in order to meet Aldi’s new store development aspirations to serve the residents of Govan, Cessnock and immediate surrounding areas which are not currently served by a store.
“The remaining authorised restaurant developments will remain as existing, with the Pizza Hut split into two as part of a recently approved planning application.
“The existing B& M entrance on the southern end of the terrace will be converted into a fire escape, and a new entrance with canopy will be created at the northern end of the retained unit.”
Aldi’s preference will be to recruit staff from within the local area, the application adds.
