Baseball bat thug threatened to murder man

- BY CONNOR GORDON

A THUG who threatened to murder a man while brandishing a baseball bat has been jailed for 252 days.

Gary McConway, 43, turned on William Marshall, 66, at his home in Glasgow’s Carntyne in June this year. McConway smashed Mr Marshall’s door before brandishing the bat at the fearful victim.

He pleaded guilty at Glasgow Sheriff Court to conducting himself in a disorderly manner while on bail.

McConway, who has a previous conviction for firearms offences, is now serving a six- month sentence for the assault he was on bail for.

T he court heard Mr Marshall was in his back garden when he heard a noise coming from outside.

He stood on his bench to find his former partner and McConway looking at him.

The woman pointed at Mr Marshall and said “that’s him”, to McConway and two other people.

Prosecutor Adele

MacDonald told the court McConway went on to smash a window and kick a fence.

Miss MacDonald added: “He kicked the back door with such force that it caved in.

“He entered the property and repeatedly swung the bat and brandished it at Mr Marshall.

“He shouted ‘ I’m going to murder you, leave her alone’ before he fled the scene.”

Mr Marshall later pointed out

McConway to police officers who arrested him.

John Coogan, defending, told the court McConway had no recollection of the incident due to alcohol.

He added there was a background due to tension between Mr Marshall and his former partner.

Sheriff Alayne Swanson said: “Given the circumstances and previous convictions before me, there is no alternative but to impose a custodial sentence.”

The sheriff ordered the 252 days to begin at the end of McConway’s current sentence.
