Thief stole booze after ferry raid

- BY CONNOR GORDON

ATHIEF who threw a gas canister at a boat in order to steal from it was jailed yesterday for 19 months. Allan McDougall initially chucked a table at the window of restaurant Renfrew Ferry in March this year.

The 32- year- old was able to make off with bottles of alcohol while the premises were shut during lockdown.

McDougall then went on to snatch alcohol and a bottle of vinegar the following month from a buffet in Glasgow’s Kingston.

He pleaded guilty yesterday at Glasgow Sheriff Court to two housebreakings items.

McDougall was on early release at the time for a previous sentence and was ordered yesterday to go back and complete 100 days of it.

The court heard McDougall was spotted by CCTV at 6am on the lower deck of the boat stationed in the city’s Anderston Quay.

Prosecutor Adele MacDonald said: “He threw a table at a window but was unsuccessful.

“He moved to a lower part of the boat and came back with a gas container.

“He used that to smash the window and enter the boat.”

McDougall initially opened the tills, but there was no money in and stealing the side, before stealing the alcohol and fleeing.

McDougall was unable to be traced until he was snared at Cook & Indi’s World Buffet 19 days later.

The drunk thief was caught by officers near the restaurant clutching 12 bottles of beer, two bottles of lager and a bottle of vinegar. He told officers that he found the items on a wall of the premises and was arrested.

Ms MacDonald told the hearing the Renfrew Ferry lost £ 250 due to McDougall’s actions.

The £ 50 of items was recovered.
