Private hire driver who attacked son loses cab licence

- BY CATHERINE HUNTER

APRIVATE HIRE driver who brandished a knife at his son while attacking him has lost his licence. In September 2018, Maqsood Mir behaved in a threatening and abusive manner at a named address in the city – repeatedly shouting and slapping at the family member on the face and body while in possession of the weapon.

In October 2019, Mr Mir was subject to a community payback order of 18 months supervision and 150 hours of unpaid work to be completed within 12 months.

The issue was brought to the attention of the licensing committee recently.

Chairman and councillor John Kane said: “You were convicted of behaving in a threatening and abusive manner, brandishing a knife and uttering threats of violence.

“Would you like to tell committee why we should think you are a fit and proper person to be holding a licence?”

Mr Mir, who required his other son to help him translate, told the committee he was unsure as to what had happened.

He said: “I have now finished my community payback order and I have been a taxi driver for six years.

“I have never acted like this

before in my life. I don’t even know how this happened, but I am a better person now because of my taxi job.”

Committee were informed by Mr Mir’s son that his brother had originally been in possession of the knife and his dad had taken it off from him.

Councillor Gary Gray said: “It has been touched on that you have a wee problem where you don’t understand some of the words and your son is there helping you.

“If you continue to be a taxi driver will your son be in the car with you interpretating for the customers?” No was the response.

Mr Gray added: “You failed to notify us of any convictions. Is there any reason why you overlooked this?”

Mr Mir’s son informed the committee that his father was unaware he had to do this in his application and that he would not have done this on purpose.
