Man jailed over pen gun firearm

A MAN charged after a pen gun firearm was seized has been jailed for five years.

Nasir Ishtiaq was held following a murder bid probe after a relative was accidentally struck with the weapon at a house in Glasgow’s Cathcart in July 2016.

The panicked 37- year- old went on to hide the gun in a wall within a close in the city’s Pollokshields.

Ishtiaq was yesterday sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow.

He had previously been found guilty of possessing the pen gun as well as attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Ishtiaq had claimed not to know the firearm was loaded or that it was even capable of firing bullets.

Lord Harrower described the pen gun as a “lethal weapon”.

The judge went on: “Your brother’s wife was hit when he discharged the gun he found in your possessions.

“She had to have the bullet removed at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow.

“It was only through the greatest of good fortune she was not more seriously injured.”

Prosecutor Lindsey Dalziel had earlier told jurors how Ishtiaq had been “irresponsible, secretive and dishonest” about the weapon.

His sister- in- law had ended up needing surgery after being hit.

Ishtiaq’s brother had once been accused of attempted murder, but was later cleared of any involvement.

Ishtiaq’s QC had argued he should not be locked up for the minimum five years.

Gordon Jackson, defending, added: “It was him who told the police about it and where it was.

“It was hidden in a wall. If he had not done so it would never have been recovered.

“He was given it by a friend. If you looked at it there is no way you would know what it was.”
