Glasgow to form new climate partnerships
GLASGOW will seek to partner with German, American and Chilean cities to tackle climate change.
Members of the city administration committee agreed to formalise a partnership with Berlin, Pittsburgh and Santiago while forming an international strategy to deal with the climate crisis.
At the meeting, Labour councillor Eva Murray suggested that Glasgow should look towards Pittsburgh which involves local communities in the decision- making process when dealing with global warming.
Ms Murray said: “I note some of the steps being taken in the state house in Pittsburgh on involving local people in tackling climate change, helping them become empowered and to take action.
“There are loads of things that we can learn from these partners and hopefully they can learn from us too.”
With just one year to go before the city’s COP26 UN summit, a report detailing the council’s continuing work on its national strategy was presented to committee.
Depute council leader David McDonald said: “In September our consultants warned that if we didn’t continue with our international strategy, our very hard- earned reputation as an international city would be at risk and that we should take steps to continue working in partnership to sell the city.
“We are now looking to formalise partnerships with Berlin, Pittsburgh and Santiago. Each of those partnerships have been warmly welcomed by our counterparts.
“I spoke recently to the Mayor of Pittsburgh to discuss our approach to climate change and prosperity.
“Our hosting of the summit is what has paved the way for a partnership with Santiago who were the hosts of COP25.”
