Money to be handed out for Clyde projects

- BY DREW SANDELANDS

MONEY for projects designed to unlock the “unrealised potential” on the banks of the Clyde will be given out by the council.

Events venue SWG3 has been awarded £1.85 million from the Scottish Government’s Clyde Mission fund to create a community garden, workspace for artists and a “creative thoroughfare” – linking Finnieston, Yorkhill, Partick and Govan.

And repairs can be carried out on the Finnieston Crane after more than £450,000 was allocated to The Big Cran Co.

In total, the city council has been asked to administer over £2.7m to third parties.

Councillors are also set to accept £2.2m for two of the council’s own projects, in Govan, when they meet on Thursday.

Just under £2m will be used on the first phase of the Water Row masterplan, which includes homes, shops and public space.

Another £200,000 is set to be spent improving 16 shopfronts in Govan town centre, focusing on Burleigh Street and Harmony Row.

The council will pass on £460,000 to the Govan Heritage Trust, which will deliver a 200KW river sources heat pump to provide heating at the Govan Old church building. The A-listed property is currently being redeveloped, with offices and events space planned.

Council leader Susan Aitken said: “While much of the Clyde has been regenerated in recent years, there remains so much unrealised potential along its banks.

“These projects will deliver real economic and social benefits for communities on both sides of the river, and we look forward to the impact they will make as part of the work to return the Clyde to its right place at the heart of the city.”

Glasgow City Council is a partner in the Clyde Mission, which is led by the Scottish Government.

A £10m fund was launched in November to support projects that “deliver economic stimulus and jobs” over 2020 and 2021. Groups could bid for between £50,000 and £2m.

Council officers will help third parties deliver the projects, due to the impact of the current lockdown and “ambitious” timescales.
