Hodgson extends stay at Edinburgh

- STUART BATHGATE

FORMER Scotland Under-20 lock Jamie Hodgson has agreed a new deal with Edinburgh, joining team-mates such as Hamish Watson, Blair Kinghorn and Jamie Ritchie in pledging his future to Richard Cockerill’s squad. In line with their usual practice, Edinburgh’s announcement of the forward’s contract did not say how long it is for.

Now 22, Hodgson (above right) signed for Edinburgh in 2018, on a partnership deal with Watsonians, and played for the Myreside club in last season’s Super6 competition. He has still only made 15 appearances for Edinburgh, but has become a regular member of the matchday squad this season and impressed the head coach with his work ethic.

“Jamie is a terrific example to younger players coming through the system or performing at Fosroc Super6 level,” Cockerill said. “He works incredibly hard at his game and has shown levels of dedication that young players should aspire to. He’s a good Edinburgh man that takes pride in representing his hometown team and we’re delighted to see him re-sign.”

While still behind senior locks like Grant Gilchrist and Ben Toolis in the pecking order when everyone is fully fit, Hodgson has matured significantly this season and can expect to get a lot more game time during the international window. “I’m very happy to be re-signing,” he said. “The club means a lot to me and I’m really excited for the future. I’ve really enjoyed the game time this year and that experience has given me a lot more confidence on the pitch.

“I want to continue having an impact on matches and I’m striving to get better and better and continue developing my game. As a team, we’re constantly getting better.

“It’s a massive privilege to be able to play for the team you’ve grown up supporting, love representing the city.”
