Kerr backs Wright to hit goal trail with Ayr

- IAIN COLLIN

MARK KERR expects Andre Wright to make a ‘big impact’ at Ayr United after signing the former Kilmarnock trialist on a deal until the end of the season.

The 24-year-old began his career with West Brom but spent last year with Bohemians where nine goals in 19 appearances earned him a place in the 2020 League of Ireland team of the year.

The imposing marksman, who bagged four goals in Bohs’ record 10-1 win over UCD in August 2019, was a free agent and failed in a bid to win a deal with Kilmarnock earlier this month.

The Englishman came close to his Ayr debut against Dunfermline at the weekend but missed the deadline for the Championship’s mandatory Covid testing.

Kerr said: “We are delighted to get this deal done and we have been working hard to add some presence up front.

“Andre has a good pedigree and was highly thought of when coming through at West Brom.

“He comes to us hungry and at the right age and will hopefully make a big impact to the way we play.

“Now I feel that we have some really good options in the forward area of the pitch.

“We’ve been trying to get him in for a couple of weeks and it would have been better to get him in for [Saturday] but just with the testing and stuff we missed the deadline, so you’re stuck to the following week.”

Wright is expected to make his debut against Dundee in tonight’s rearranged fixture at Dens Park.

Kerr added: “We’re not going to shy away from the task in front of us, to go and put a run together. I’m sure it will come, I’m positive it will come.”
