Man punched his neighbour amid parking dispute

AMAN punched his neighbour in the face over a parking dispute. John Wannop assaulted the man who approached him outside local shops on Alderman Road, Knightswood.

The 44-year-old previously pleaded guilty following the incident on May 10 last year.

The procurator fiscal depute said: “The witness and his partner had ongoing issues with their neighbour, who is the accused.

“At about 3.45pm both witnesses observed the accused outside the local shop. The witness approached the accused in a civil manner to resolve a matter that had arisen earlier. The other witness was fearful the situation would begin to escalate so started to record on a mobile phone. The accused punched the witness to the face.

“At 4pm, police officers received a report regarding the incident and traced the accused. He was cautioned and charged and made no reply.”

Wannop’s solicitor explained that the dispute was over parking issues.

He added: “The narrative states that the complainer approached him in a civil manner, but he tells me that this was not the case.

“He was in the military for 15 years and served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety and depression. However, this not an excuse in any way.”

Sheriff Patricia Pryce said: “It is of great concern you are already subject to a community payback order. This is your second offence within a short period of time, and you’ve not been in court before these.

“Your violence is concerning, and the fact you chose to react this way. But you seem to be improving in terms of your engagement with the current supervision.

“I’m not going to impose another community payback order; I’m prepared to deal with this with a restriction of liberty order.”

Wannop was ordered to stay within his home address in Knightswood between 9pm-5am for 18 weeks. is
