Art trail unveiled as community opens up

- BY HEATHER CARRICK

RESIDENTS of Shawlands might notice a bit more colour on their streets – after a brand-new art trail was launched in the area. In a project by the Business Improvement District group, MyShawlands, artwork has been placed around the South Side neighbourhood.

The art trail has been launched after a year of planning.

MyShawlands manager Lisa McLaughlin said: “The launch of our art trail is really exciting, it has felt like a long time coming.

“This is just phase one and the response from the public so far has been amazing.”

Locals will be able to spot colourful artworks all over the community, from murals such as ones seen outside Shawlands Continental on Moss-Side Road, to the George Rickey sculpture in the middle of the Queen’s Park pond.

Lisa said: “We are used to putting on events throughout the year but this has obviously been put on hold because of the restrictions.

“The art trail around Shawlands means that we are able to safely allow people to come into the area and walk about as they follow the trail.

“Not only is this a way of keeping people engaged with the community while keeping safe, but it also helps us to support our local businesses.

“Non-essential shops are now open, and with the art trail, we hope that it brings more footfall to the area to help support these business owners who have been closed for so long.”

The trail features a mix of art including illustration and sculpture, with works coming from artists such as Taio, Steve Blackmore and Jennie Bates.

Lisa said: “With this only being the first phase of the trail, we are looking at adding even more artists and their works to it.

“When we launched, we started getting contacted by people who wanted to take part, including ceramists, which would be a great addition.

“It has been a really, really tough year for people.

“To know have something so positive and colourful and visual in the area after this year, it means a lot to people and the area as a whole.”
