PROBE AFTER FIRE RIPS THROUGH HISTORIC CITY BUILDING
APROBE has been launched after a huge blaze strenuously ripped through a historical city building during the early hours of yesterday morning.
Dramatic images of the fire show the full extent of the flames, which engulfed the derelict building close to the Old College Bar on High Street.
More than 40 firefighters were called to tackle the inferno after the alarm was raised at 1.30am.
Crews fought the flames throughout the night and remained on the scene yesterday afternoon.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown. However, Fire and Rescue have confirmed there were no injuries.
Images have shown the devastating aftermath, which police have confirmed has caused “significant damage” to the 19th century building.
Detectives are appealing to members of the public who may have witnessed any suspicious activity to come forward.
Detective Constable Neil Bonsor, of Stewart Street CID, said: “Our inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances the incident.
“The blaze has significant damage building’s structure.
“We would urge anyone who was in the area around the time of the incident, and who saw any suspicious behaviour, to contact us.”
A Scottish Fire and Rescue spokesman added: “We were alerted at 1.27am on Tuesday, May 4, to a report of a derelict building on fire at High St, Glasgow.
“Operations Control immediately mobilised four fire appliances to the scene. Firefighters were met with a well-developed fire and surrounding
caused to the requested further resources to bring the fire under control.
“At its height, more than 40 firefighters, seven fire engines and two height appliances were in attendance. There are no reported casualties and crews continue to work to extinguish the fire.”
