Former Gers pub could be flattened for flats

AN old pub that was popular among Rangers fans could be flattened to make way for a “bespoke” block of serviced apartments.

Planning applications have been submitted to Glasgow City Council to bulldoze the derelict Annie Millers bar on Ropework Lane to make way for 18 new flats.

Among the plans, developers Big Top hope to bring a rooftop terrace, parking spaces for cyclists and two penthouses to the area.

According to planning documents, renters will be able to occupy the homes on a short-term letting basis.

A statement from Big Top reads: “The existing building has been derelict for some time since the pub closed therefore it has fallen into disrepair having a negative impact on townscape.

“A new development of this nature will improve Ropework Lane by creating a more welcoming environment whilst at the same time provide a robust building that is easily adaptable for future generations and uses.

“This is a contemporary piece of architecture that responds to its historic context and will make a positive contribution to Ropework Lane.”

One objector to the plans has told how the unlisted 1800s building “should be preserved” with the conservation area.

He said: “Being in a conservation area, the existing building should be preserved not demolished.

“I also have a concern that the 18 serviced apartments will cause a loss of light ie overshadow neighbouring properties – especially the Metropole Building flats along Ropework Lane.

“I urge you not to proceed with this proposal.”

It is understood planning chiefs will make a decision on Tuesday.
