Hastie targets place in Rangers side on return

- ALISON McCONNELL

JAKE Hastie’s patience at Motherwell this season should stand him in good stead as he returns to Ibrox this season, according to the 22-year-old midfielder.

Hastie returned to his former club on a season-long loan deal this term but is confident that the maturity he has gained since he left Fir Park for the permanent switch to Rangers two years ago will help him to force his way into Steven Gerrard’s plans.

He had to bide his time following the arrival of Graham Alexander at Fir Park but is looking to end his loan spell in Lanarkshire this weekend by bowing out on the back of a win that could place Motherwell at the top of the bottom six.

“I’m just going to go back to Rangers and see what happens in pre-season,” he said.

“I definitely, 100-per-cent want to go back and prove myself. Rangers always come out and watch the games I’ve played and assess them.

“I’m buzzing for them this year for them to win the league. I’m really happy for them. They’ve been brilliant this season, absolutely brilliant. I’ve spoken to a few of them, especially in group chats, and I’ve wished them all the best for the big games that have come up for them. They’ve been brilliant.

“I will keep my head down and work hard and see what happens. I’ve learned this season that sometimes you need to keep your head down and keep working hard and your chance will eventually come.”

There is one more game still to play before then with Motherwell hosting Ross County. The Highlanders still need a point to avoid a play-off fight with Hastie looking to keep his place in the team.

“It’s been good over the last few weeks,” said Hastie. “The last few matches I’ve managed to get a bit of game time and I enjoyed the game against Dundee United. It was a good comeback by us.

“I’ve always worked hard behind the scenes and just waiting for my chance. The boys have been doing well so I’ve kept my head down. I got in last weekend and did okay and I played against United as well.”
