Former Celtic target Howe takes over at Newcastle

EDDIE HOWE is the new manager of Newcastle. The Premier League club have announced the ex-Celtic managerial target has agreed a move to St James’ Park.

The former Bournemouth boss takes the Newcastle job, until at least the summer of 2024, under the new Saudirich ownership in his first role since leaving the Vitality Stadium.

Howe had been deep in talks to take the Celtic job in the summer before talks collapsed at the eleventh hour.

Howe had reportedly been ready to move to Glasgow ahead of the new season before pulling out with Ange Postecoglou then moving to Parkhead.

On his appointment, Howe told the club website: “It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family.

“This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.

“I would like to thank the club’s owners for this opportunity and thank the club’s supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together.”
