Glasgow Tory leader says Boris Johnson should resign

-

BORIS Johnson should resign, according to the leader of the Conservatives on Glasgow City Council.

Thomas Kerr was asked if Johnson should resign as he has been found to have broken the law and fined over lockdown parties in Downing Street.

Speaking at a Glasgow Times election hustings on Wednesday evening, the Tory councillor said he has not changed his mind on the matter.

Mr Kerr said: “I made my position very clear on this in January and I stand by the position I made.

“I think his actions are indefensible and I said this in January and it’s a position I stand by.”

He repeated his belief that Johnson should quit adding: “If it was up to me I think the Prime Minister should go.

“I’ve said that since January. I’ve not changed my mind, but this is a local election focused on local issues.”

The SNP are urging voters across the city and all over Scotland to use the council elections to “send a message” to the Tories at Downing Street over the fines handed out by the Metropolitan Police

to staff and officials for breaching lockdown rules, after a lengthy investigation which involved interviews and questionnaires.

The Conservative councillor, who is standing for re-election in Shettleston in the east of the city, refuted that and said that the election should not be about the Prime Minister or national issues but those which the council has responsibility for.

Mr Kerr added: “The Prime Minister is not on the ballot paper and instead we are dealing with the disaster that I think has been the past five years of this SNP administration and I think Glaswegians will be judging that next week rather than nationally.”

Mr Kerr’s opinion is at odds with the leader of the Scottish Conservatives, Douglas Ross, who flipped his position from saying Johnson should resign, and even handing in a letter of no confidence to the party’s backbench committee, only to later with draw it and state publicly that Johnson should remain in post, even after fines were issued, because the UK needed stable leadership during the war in Ukraine.
