Devastated dog owner hit with huge vet bills

- BY KIRSTY FEERICK

ADEVASTATED dog owner has been hit with crippling vet bills but is determined to save her pet’s life. Michelle Lauder is facing up to £5000 in bills after her dog, Rocky, developed autoimmune hemolytic anemia.

The condition means his body destroys and attacks his own red blood cells which can be lifethreatening. Now the 50-year-old, from Paisley, must make payments upfront to save her six-year-old Tibetan terrier cross staffy as she has no insurance.

Her family are refusing to give up on the dog as he “is the reason they find happiness” every day.

A GoFundMe has also been set up to help the family pay for Rocky’s treatment to save his life.

Michelle told the Glasgow Times: “Recently over the past few weeks we noticed his decline in health as his energy is completely gone.

“His appetite has nearly vanished, he’s lost a lot of weight, and all he wants to do is sleep.

“We found out last Friday at the vets that Rocky was seriously unwell, and after a blood test he said it was autoimmune hemolytic anemia. He said we could be looking at between £2000 and £5000 to get Rocky treatment at the animal hospital that he would need to survive. Rocky is a massive part of our lives and has been one of the reasons we all find happiness every day.

“He is receiving some steroid injection to stop the deterioration until we can afford treatment and for now Rocky is not in pain.

“Due to us making the mistake of not having insurance for him we are needing to make an upfront cost at the small animal hospital at Glasgow University for him to start treatment as we want to do everything we can to get him better. My family and I would really appreciate anything small as everything is appreciated massively as we want to do everything we can to make him better.”
