New Taiwanese restaurant unveiled

- BY SARAH CAMPBELL

NEON lighting and upbeat music spilled out from the city centre’s newest restaurant yesterday as the team welcomed its very first customers.

After a number of setbacks due to the pandemic, Bao has opened for business on Bothwell Street, just a stone’s throw away from Glasgow’s Central Station, promising a tempting menu of Taiwanese street food eats.

Social media manager Magdalena Madejska said: “We’ve been trying to open for around a year now but Covid really slowed the whole process down.

“We’ve had a lot of people stopping by over the last few weeks to ask when we’re opening so it’s exciting to finally have customers in.

“It’s all been designed so that people feel like they’re at home and will sit and enjoy the experience instead of rushing.”

It’s a compact spot which bustles with activity as chefs make use of the tiny kitchen space to fire out portions of BBQ beef noodles, pork gyoza, bamboo stick rice and of course, plenty of fluffy steamed bao buns.

Talking us through the dishes, Magdalena said: “There aren’t a lot of Taiwanese restaurants around so it’s great to be bringing some new flavours into Glasgow.

“The chefs are really excited and they’ve been working hard on our menu. We’re focusing mainly on our bao and donburi at the moment but we’re really eager to expand on that as time goes on.

“We’ve kept it simple to start things off but we’ll be listening to customer feedback to expand and develop.”

A steady stream of customers throughout the morning is surely a sign of good things to come for the team at Bao who have worked hard to ensure opening morning went off without a hitch.

Magdalena said: “The support from everyone both online and in person has been amazing.

“If it wasn’t for the people who love food and drink in Glasgow then we wouldn’t be here.

“We’re so happy to finally be open and look forward to bringing something a little different to the street.”
