Confusion reigns over Super6 pool policy
AS the Premiership season begins a run of six consecutive match weekends leading into Christmas, which could make or break the playoff and/ or survival chances of almost every team in the competition, the integrity of the whole league is under threat due to the mystery over which Super6 players are being made available to which Premiership clubs and for what reason.
A Super6 pool system has been set up for players who have not had enough game time in the part- time professional league ( which ran from the start of August to the end of October), but Scottish Rugby has decided not to share the details of how this works and who is involved to the outside world.
It feels like clubs are going to find themselves in a lottery every week hoping that Murrayfield and Super6 treat them generously.
At this stage it is impossible to judge how much of an impact this parachuting in of players will have on the outcome of the league, and some sort of clarity on how the whole thing is being managed would surely help allay anxiety about the Premiership being negatively impacted because of a failure to develop a decent season structure further up the food chain.
Hawick currently top the table but know that they will face a very real challenge to their unbeaten record when they host Border rivals Jed- Forest at Mansfield Park this afternoon.
Second- placed Edinburgh Accies face a tricky assignment away to last season’s champions Marr, who will be desperate to get their campaign back on track after four defeats on the bounce.
Currie Chieftains were pre- season favourite and are currently third in the table with basement dwellers Musselburgh due at Malleny Park this afternoon, while GHA host Heriot’s Blues at Braidholm, and Glasgow Hawks welcome Selkirk to Balgray.
