Drunk mechanic’s car spun 90 degrees before crash

A DRUNK mechanic who spun 90 degrees before racing from police has been jailed for eight months.

Alexander Anderson, 37, drove “erratically” in Glasgow’s Govan on May 13.

The disqualified motorist was clocked after striking a light after doing the spin.

Anderson is currently serving a two- year sentence for ploughing into a car with the driver fracturing her back.

The victim’s car spun 180 degrees after Anderson crashed into it at a red traffic light while travelling at 60 to 70 miles per hour.

Anderson pleaded guilty to his latest charges of driving while disqualified and dangerous driving at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

He also admitted a further drink driving offence.

Prosecutor Christopher McKnight said: “Officers noted a car to be driving erratically and peformed a handbrake turn spinning 90 degrees then striking a light – almost striking a pedestrian barrier.”

Blue lights and sirens were activated as officers pursued Anderson but lost sight of him.

The car he was driving was later found abandoned however Anderson returned to the vehicle.

His details were checked and he was found to be a disqualified driver before being arrested.

He took a breath test at a police station and was found to be over the limit.

Michael McKeown, defending, said: “He has a very poor record for road traffic offences.

“He is a mechanic to trade and has been working with motors on a daily basis but in the recent past he has been having difficulties with alcohol and substance abuse.

“He makes poor decisions under the influence and he has access to vehicles – they are always to hand.

“Mr Anderson very much regrets his actions and understands the risks posed by his actions and is fortunate nobody was injured”

Sheriff Iain Fleming ordered that Anderson’s latest sentence to run consecutively to the two- year term he is serving.
