Wyndford resident praises energy giant

- BY ESZTER TÁRNAI

ANORTH Glasgow man is pra i s i n g a n energy supplier after the firm offered a discount on bills to eligible residents. Bill Carroll, who has been living at the Wyndford estate for more than 50 years, said the £ 100 decrease from SSE will make a difference amid the cost- of- living crisis. He said: “It will certainly help. “Our prices in October didn’t go up, plus they are giving us an extra £ 100 discount, so it means anybody who is elderly or in need should be able to run their heating a little bit easier, without having to worry as much as they would have been.

“This support is most definitely important, especially in the circumstances we find ourselves in at the moment.”

Energy company SSE provides hot water to 1800 homes in the Maryhill estate, from a nearby power plant, which generates it as a by- product of burning gas.

Initially introduced in 2011, the scheme aims to alleviate fuel poverty. The company confirmed that it is running a scheme to reduce eligible locals’ bills by £ 100 to financially support them. The 60- year- old added: “I think it will make a big difference. It’s not that much in the bigger picture but it is a lot of money that will help a lot of people.”

Independent from the Government’s Warm Home Discount Scheme and Energy Bills Support Scheme, Wyndford residents can now apply for the £ 100.

An SSE spokesperson said: “We are very mindful that many household budgets will be stretched as we enter the winter period.

“SSE felt it was the right thing to do to set up a fund specifically for our heat network customers at Wyndford, giving the opportunity to those that were most in need to apply for a £ 100 credit to their heat energy account.

“So far, we’ve had a good initial take- up of our offer, but we want to help as many Wyndford customers as possible, so please get in touch with us at community. energy@ sse. com to claim your support.

This gesture of goodwill from SSE is separate to – and therefore in addition to – the range of measures the UK Government has unveiled to provide financial support.”
