TV weatherman Sean Batty cut the ribbon on a brandnew Lidl store. The star was pictured in a fitting Lidl Christmas jumper, celebrating the opening of the new Airdrie store, the first one in the town.

The new unit is the official 111th location of the supermarket giant in Scotland.

Located on Carlisle Road, the new store has a 1255 sq metres sales area and features Lidl’s much- loved in- store bakery and customer toilets with baby changing facilities.

Solar panels have also been installed on the roof, as well as rapid electric charging points in the associated car park.

The site also allows for a drivethru and future retail opportunities for other businesses.

To mark the occasion, colleagues of the chain raised a record- breaking £ 111,000 in donations, through STV’s Children’s Appeal.

The funds came through team game nights, bucket collections and cycling challenges and will go to grassroots charities and community organisations that support some of the country’s most vulnerable children and young people. Sean, STV Children’s Appeal ambassador, said: “It has been an honour to officially open Lidl’s 111th store in Airdrie, coinciding with a whopping £ 111,000 in Lidl donations to the STV Children’s Appeal.

“Vulnerable children and young people across Scotland are in need of our help now more than ever, and every donation goes a long way in supporting these vital charities and organisations.”

Lidl GB’s regional head of property for Scotland, Gordon Rafferty, said: “We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has helped make Lidl’s 111th store a reality.

“We would also like to extend our sincere thanks to Sean Batty, for cutting the ribbon to coincide with Lidl’s £ 111,000 of STV Children’s Appeal donations over the past year.

“The new store will continue to bring great products and fantastic offers to the local community, along with high quality, fresh Scottish produce throughout the year.”
