Dozens of people protest for person to be ‘ removed’

APERSON was removed for their own safety from a f lat in Castlemilk on Thursday night after angry crowds protested outside. Dozens of ‘ Justice for Rhys’ campaigners gathered at Waterbank Heights – a high- rise block of flats at Dougrie Place.

They demanded the person, believed to be living there at the time, was taken away by police officers.

Cops were first called to the scene at around 7pm. The crowd quickly got bigger as more and more people arrived to join the protest.

It was broadcast live by several TikTok users.

Around a dozen cops surrounded the group, as they chanted “What do we want? Justice for Rhys. When do we want it? Now.” Officers who were sent to control the crowd, also guarded the entrance to the flats to ensure noone entered.

As the person was being removed from the property hours later at 10pm, several cops escorted them into a police van, which quickly drove away with its blue lights flashing. Crowds later dispersed.

Rhys Bonner, 19, was discovered lifeless in marshland between Easterhouse and Gartloch Village in August 2019.

His heartbroken mum Stephanie is campaigning for better support from police for families left to cope with the unexplained death of loved ones.

Police Scotland claim the death was fully investigated and declared ‘ not suspicious’. Stephanie claims she has waited almost three years for answers as to how and where her son lost his life.

We previously reported how she will air her plight at the Scottish Parliament.

The Barlanark woman has been invited by members of the Citizen Participation and Public Petitions Committee to give evidence on the issues raised by a petition to improve the way that unexplained deaths are dealt with.

It calls on MSPs to rally the Scottish Government and ask Police Scotland to review practices from the initial recovery of a body through to the support that it offers to grieving family members.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 8.40pm on Thursday, November 24, 2022, police were made aware of a gathering outside a property in Castlemilk, Glasgow.

“Officers attended and gave advice and assistance and the group later dispersed.

“No arrests were made.”
