Plans for eight blocks of ‘ affordable’ flats

MORE than 70 new affordable homes will be built in Glasgow if the plans are approved.

The Wheatley Group has applied for permission to build a new residential development at the site of the former Shawbridge Arcade shopping centre in Pollokshaws.

Proposals include a total of 71 properties over eight blocks and a new ground and first- floor office for The Wheatley Group.

The homes, seven of which will be wheelchair flats, will be a mix of one and twobedrooms.

Earlier this year, the arcade was approved for demolition. It was built in the 1970s as part of the Pollokshaws redevelopment, but over time the centre become very run down.

A statement in the planning documents read: “The proposals have followed a design process between the consultant design team, pre- planning consultation with Glasgow City Council planning officers, and local stakeholders including the Pollokshaws Transformational Regenerational Area Local Delivery Group and Connecting Pollokshaws.

“The client Wheatley Group will be obtaining the site from Glasgow City Council to develop for housing.

“Given its previous central importance, and its gradual decay and decline, any new proposal’s first priority would be to create to a new development which brings pride and a firm sense of place to the local residents of Pollokshaws.”

A total of 28 car parking spaces will be available, meanwhile, there will be more than 70 storage spaces for bikes.

A further statement in the documents read: “Due to the low car ownership in the area, and its use as affordable housing, a mix of unallocated lay by car parking ( to Ashtree Road) and end on parking ( to Greenview Street) has been proposed.”

Bosses at Glasgow City Council will accept or reject the plans by March.
