A FREELANCE hair stylist is over the moon after winning top gongs at a prestigious awards ceremony in London.

Cameron Knox, 25, from Dumbarton, won freelancer and colourist of the year at the Salon Awards earlier this month.

The famous awards ceremony celebrates and recognises the talent of hairdressers, salons and barbers all over the country but the West End- based hair stylist never thought he would be amongst the winners.

Cameron, who has been working in the field for almost a decade, told the Glasgow Times: “I really didn’t expect to win, it was a complete and utter shock.

“I was just sitting there at my table, and the next minute I heard my name being called and everyone around me was just screaming.

“Being shortlisted was enough, but winning the title just doesn’t feel real, even now.”

The hair stylist, who specialises in colour, added that despite his shock, he is ‘ chuffed’, a feeling that hasn’t stopped with him.

Cameron said: “My clients were all following the awards online through my Instagram and stuff and they were all just so chuffed.

“They’ve sent me loads of messages and have been coming into the salon and just screaming and looking at the award.

“The support has been overwhelming in such a positive way.”

Cameron became a freelance, self- employed hair stylist and colour specialist just before the beginning of the pandemic.

Though he began his career at around 16- years- old, his love for the profession has only grown.

He said: “My job gives me a way to create something amazing every other day.

“I meet really interesting people from all different occupations, backgrounds, and walks of life. It’s so diverse. I can go from one extreme to the other.

“My first client could be a natural colour and look, and then by the afternoon I can be doing a bright blue mullet.

“I feel lucky to work in an incredible industry, I’m so grateful and blessed.”

Following the awards, Cameron wants to “hit the ground running” by continuing to apply for awards and improving in his profession.

Cameron is based out of Aimee Ryan Hair & Beauty in the West End.
