Ice hockey team raise £ 25k for 20- year- old with stage four cancer
A20- YEAR- OLD woman with cancer has been left at a ‘ loss for words’ following a hefty donation. Alix Maitland was recently diagnosed with stage four Hodgkin lymphoma cancer.
Since the diagnosis, the student nurse from Paisley has been on the hunt to raise money for the Lymphoma Action charity, as she undergoes chemotherapy.
To help her on her mission, the Glasgow Clan ice hockey team have given her a massive helping hand.
The team dedicated their recent home game against Manchester Storm to raising money for the charity.
The players wore limited edition hockey jerseys that were specifically designed to promote Alix’s fundraising efforts, which were auctioned off after the match in a bid to raise money for the charity.
There was also a bucket collection at the arena during the game.
In total, the team raised a whopping £ 25,855 for Alix’s cause.
Alix said: “I’m lost for words, as I never expected the Clan to raise that much.
“That total is amazing, the support and generosity on the night from everyone was unmatched.
“I know the charity will be so grateful to receive that amount as it allows them to continue helping people in the same boat as me.” Gareth Chalmers, managing director of Braehead Arena, added: “Alix is well known to the Clan family and we were shocked to hear about her cancer diagnosis.
“But she has shown incredible bravery by launching her fundraising campaign to raise money for Lymphoma Action while going through chemotherapy with after- effects that can be quite debilitating.
“The best way for us to salute Alix and her courage was to help her collect as much money as possible for the charity and our fans have been extremely generous to raise so much money for a good cause.”
