STAFF at an auction house in Glasgow are honouring a colleague who has an incurable brain tumour.

Lyon & Turnbull has chosen Brain Tumour Research as its Charity of the Year for 2024 inspired by their co- worker Theo Burrell, a patron of the charity, who was diagnosed with a glioblastoma ( GBM) in June 2022.

Ms Burrell’s diagnosis came after suffering from symptoms for six months.

The 37- year- old underwent lifeextending surgery, followed by radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

Her most recent scan took place on January 8, which showed she was stable.

She said: “I’m delighted my colleagues at Lyon & Turnbull have made Brain Tumour Research its Charity of the Year.

“The team are wonderful and I’m extremely touched. Raising money for research is vital because we need it in order to improve treatments in future and, ultimately, to find a cure.”

More than 1,000 people in Scotland are diagnosed with a brain tumour every year and around 400 people in the country die from highgrade brain tumours annually.

Tessa Stirling, valuations manager, said: “We all know Theo very well, so when she was diagnosed, we were all immensely shocked and felt incredibly sad.

“Theo is such a vibrant character, so the thought of something so horrifying happening to someone as vivacious and fun- loving as her is awful.

“Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer, yet just one per cent of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease. That is terrible and we want to fund research to help find a cure.”

Lyon & Turnbull plan to fund three days of research at a Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence, costing £ 2,740 per day.

Their fundraising activities kicked- off with the annual charity event Wear A Hat Day on March 28.

Katrina Jones, head of community fundraising at Brain Tumour Research, said: “We are extremely grateful to Lyon & Turnbull for choosing us as its charity of the year.

“With their support, we can get closer to our vision of finding a cure for all types of brain tumours by funding research at our Brain Tumour Research Centres of Excellence.”
