Youngsters team up for suicide prevention awareness bid

YOUNGSTERS from across Lanarkshire have showcased their sporting talents to raise awareness about suicide prevention.

Over 200 senior school pupils from high schools in both North and South Lanarkshire took part in football and netball tournaments at Ravenscraig Sports Centre last Wednesday.

The event was organised in support of the suicide prevention campaigns from both local authorities.

They aim to tackle the stigma surrounding suicide and encourage open conversations to prevent it.

As part of the event, Provost Kenneth Duffy welcomed representatives from Airdrieonians and Motherwell FC to support it, while highlighting the importance of working together to prevent suicide in communities across Lanarkshire.

Louise Roarty, deputy leader of North Lanarkshire Council, explained: “It was fantastic to see so many pupils and schools taking part in this vital awareness- raising tournament.

“There were some really talented teams and individuals taking part and it was really encouraging to see the young people wanting to help spread the word about suicide prevention.

“Peer pressure, online bullying and the pressure to succeed are concerns that can weigh heavily on young minds.

“We want to share the message that help is available and encourage people to talk openly about suicide so we can all help to try and prevent it.”

The netball competition was won by Calderhead High School.

Meanwhile, Coltness High School in Wishaw scooped the award for the football tournament.
