Urgent ‘ action plan’ in place for school

EDUCATION bosses in North Lanarkshire are working with staff at an Airdrie high school on an urgent “action plan” to address issues raised in a recent inspection.

The Education Scotland team plans to return to Caldervale High, which has around 1000 pupils, in six months’ time.

A spokesperson said: “As a result of our inspection findings, we think that the school needs additional support and more time to make necessary improvements.”

The inspectors found a number of key strengths at the school, including “positive relationships between staff and young people in the classroom” which resulted in motivated young people, and “an effective transition programme for young people moving from primary to secondary school.”

The report also praised the “increase in the numbers of young people obtaining literacy and numeracy qualifications” and added: “Staff have had a positive impact on increasing presentation levels in the senior phase.”

However, a number of areas for improvement were identified. The inspection report said: “Senior leaders should improve strategic leadership at all levels across the school, so that all members of the school community contribute meaningfully to improving their school.

“Teachers should improve the consistency and quality of learners’ experiences. Staff need to ensure that programmes and courses are carefully planned and designed to meet the needs of all learners.

“Staff should develop young people’s understanding of wellbeing and its relevance to their lives. Staff should raise attainment for all young people, including a focus on effective targeting of gaps in knowledge and skills.”

A North Lanarkshire Council spokesperson said: “The report highlights strengths and areas for improvement for the school.

“Staff from our education, children and families service are working closely with the new head teacher, senior management team and wider teaching staff at the school as a matter of urgency, to create an action plan to address the identified areas for improvement.

“We would like to assure parents and carers that we will closely track and monitor the school’s progress to secure the necessary improvements to ensure that Caldervale is a great place for pupils to learn and grow.”
