Mexican treat proves a top pick for brekkie

THERE’S not much I enjoy more than heading out for breakfast on my days off, so when the Glasgow Times was invited to Topolabamb­a West End to try out its new brunch menu, I couldn’t pass up the chance and headed along on Easter Sunday.

The menu at the Byres Road restaurant features a range of breakfast tacos, burritos, eggs benedict and hearty breakfast skillets with Mexican flavours, alongside a selection of brunch special cocktails and hot drinks.

As a fan of Mexican food, I was overwhelme­d with the choice, but I eventually decided on the Huevos Fundido breakfast skillet, which has peasant potatoes, smoky chorizo and garlic roasted peppers smothered in artisan jack cheese sauce and topped with two fried eggs, with some bread on the side.

It was very similar to the Queso Fundido which is a favourite dish of mine on the regular Topolabamb­a menu.

It was delicious with lots of flavour and the bread was perfect for scooping up the cheese.

My friend and I also decided to share a portion of the Huevos Verduras breakfast tacos which had two corn tortillas topped with roasted butternut squash, mushrooms, black beans, fried eggs, crumbly cheese and red mole sauce.

They were much too full to pick up and eat like a regular taco but they were tasty and a lighter option than the skillet so they went along nicely with that ( though they definitely weren’t needed).

My friend had the Morcilla huevos benedictin­e which had spiced potato, black pudding and poached eggs on two corn tortillas and topped with a chipotle hollandais­e sauce.

I didn’t try this myself but she really enjoyed it, especially the chipotle hollandais­e, and her empty plate was a good sign.

We both topped it all off with a Mimosa Margarita which consisted of Arette tequila, lime juice, orange juice and prosecco.

This was really refreshing and I was surprised how well the prosecco paired with the tequila. Regular mimosas may have been ruined for me after this.

The brunch kept me full for the rest of the day, fuelling a lovely walk around Kelvingrov­e Park in the sun.

Much like everything else, going out for breakfast or brunch is something that is going up in price but I found the cost of dishes at Topolabamb­a reasonable with many priced under £ 10 and the vast majority under £ 12.

Glasgow has no shortage of delicious places to go to for brunch so it’s great to see a new addition that offers something a little different at a good price and I would definitely visit here again.
