‘ Fantastic afternoon’: Care home hosts first ‘ bake off’

-

A CARE home in Tollcross has hosted its first annual bake off.

The residents of Haydale Care Home were given the opportunity to whip up their favourite desserts as part of the event.

It was arranged to bring people together by opening the competition to residents, their families, members of the community and other care homes owned by Advinia Health Care.

In the lead- up, residents made practice cakes which the home says have a sensory benefit for all levels of dementia and learning disabilities. They could taste, smell and touch the cakes which meant the activity was inclusive to everyone.

The event also had a reminiscence benefit to residents and families as it was the chance to remember their favourite cakes, and share stories of baking disasters or their love of baking.

There were more than 20 entries, including the youngest contender at just nine years old, from lemon drizzle to

caramel shortcake, strawberry sponge, Lotus cookies and Oreo brownies.

Entries were judged by five members of staff on taste, texture, creativity, presentation and technique.

William Stirling, a resident, said: “What a great afternoon, it’s my dream job eating all these cakes.”

Another resident, Ella McLeish, asked “can I lick the spoon?” at the end of the session.

Residents and families were able to enjoy a cup of tea while they waited for the judges’ decision.

The winner was maintenance man Jamie McDavitt with his sprinkle surprise cake. Jamie will now be hosting next year’s bake off event following his win.

In second place was Elizabeth McKeegan with a velvet heartshaped cake and third place was Mihaela Grijincu with a summer fruits and chocolate mousse cake.

Fiona Hunter, Haydale home manager, said: “What a fantastic afternoon and what a great family and community spirit within the home.”
