Walking and wheeling festival coming to Glasgow park

-

A CELEBRATION of walking and wheeling is set to take place in Glasgow Green next month.

The Glasgow Walking and Wheeling Festival will offer a variety of activities suitable for families and individuals of all ages on May 11.

Some of the planned activities are health walks, outdoor games, free bike repairs, taster sessions for adapted bikes, free health check- ups, music, face- painting, and arts and crafts sessions.

Additionally, the Glasgow City Council’s Avenues team will share updates on the development of city centre public realm projects.

Councillor Angus Millar, convener for Climate and Transport at the council, said: “The Walking and Wheeling Festival will offer lots of fun and interesting activities.

“There will be the chance to find out more about what is being done in Glasgow city centre and beyond to make it easier for people who walk or wheel to get around our streets.”

Wheeling is a broad term covering anything from cycling to using a wheelchair or pushing a pram or buggy.

The festival will run from 11am to 3pm, and themed walks across the city will continue for two weeks after the main event.

This includes history and heritage strolls, a teddy bear’s picnic for young children and longer hikes.

People are encouraged to book in advance. Local artists Walker & Bromwich have collaborated with schools and communities for a Festival Procession.

The festival is organised by the Glasgow Avenues Programme in partnership with Glasgow Life, Sustrans and is supported by organisations volunteering to deliver the event.

Caroline Austin, engagement officer for Sustrans, said: “Walking and wheeling are great ways to get around and explore your local area, and even to get into the city centre.

“Leave the stress of the car at home and improve your physical health and overall wellbeing.

“We strongly encourage everyone to join us at Glasgow Green and take part in all the fun activities on offer.”
