Six shots of glory for Scott

-

DUNCAN SCOTT is in line for up to six shots at glory in Paris this summer as the Olympic swimming trials ended in London last night.

The Tokyo 2020 silver medallist was second to world champion Matt Richards in the 200 metres freestyle final with reigning Olympic champion Tom Dean set to miss out on a title defence after coming third.

But it underlined the massive threat from a 4x200 relay squad that will be eyeing up a repeat gold. And the

27- year- old, who delivered a late surge to clock 1: 44.75, believes the cut- throat domestic competition can spark another gold rush in July.

“It’s always so difficult with only two individual spots,” said Scott, pictured. “I was on the wrong side of it last year. But at the same time it urges everyone on. There was real quality in that race and that’s quite exciting for the 4x200.”

Kara Hanlon’s Olympic dreams were shattered when she was edged out by an agonising six- hundredths of a second by newcomer Angharad Evans in the 100m breaststroke final. The duo were outside British h Swimming’s qualifying standard with the Western Islander set to be left off the team. m.

Hanlon said: d: “I really thought I had that time in me. e. To give it everything for the last two, three years, it’s just gutting.

“I know I had a good touch there, even if I didn’t win. You know, things happen for a reason and it will just take a take a few days before I can properly reflect on this.”

Fellow Scot Lucy Hope is likely to miss out on a second relay shot in Paris after finishing seventh in the 100m freestyle, won by Anna Hopkin. While Ollie Morgan came out ahead in the men’s 200m backstroke.

It le leaves at least four Scots definit definitely in the team for Paris with Scott, S Hope, Keanna Macin Macinnes and Kathleen Dawso Dawson guaranteed selection and K Katie Shanahan expected to b be added when the full sq squad is unveiled in S Stirling in eight days’ time.
