‘ We are in a big hole’: Martindale wants Livi to play without fear

-

LIVINGSTON manager David Martindale hopes his players can play without pressure during their final six games of the season after the goalless draw against Aberdeen on Saturday.

Bojan Miovski had a late goal disallowed for offside for the Dons as Livingston held on, although the gap to Ross County in 11th is still a daunting nine points for the Lions.

Martindale hopes the grim reality of their league position can help his players play without fear, although he admitted they are struggling with injuries after naming only four outfield players on the bench for Saturday’s match.

He said: “I think we are at that stage where there’s less pressure on us now because of reality.

“Once you are in this position, there is a bit of realism that sets in. You have to be logical and pragmatic. We are in a big hole and it is difficult. Does that release any pressure? Potentially.

“It is how I like to manage, game by game, see where we are. We had four outfield subs on the bench today and there was a concussion substitute.

“The referee said I could have another substitute. Where? I had four players and I could make six substitutions. And two of them were forced off through injury.

“The group we have got just now need a hand. We need some of the injured players back giving us a hand. The group that was on the park today, the group that came on, the substitutes, I felt they showed the fans that they care.”

Aberdeen interim manager Peter Leven admitted it was a disappointment to have their bottomsix status confirmed after failing to find a winner in West Lothian.

Leven also reiterated that he will lead the team for as long as he is asked, as the club continue their search for a permanent appointment.

He said: “It’s difficult to be in the bottom six. It’s not where we want to be but we’re in a situation and it’s my job right now to make sure we get as many points as possible to try and finish as high up the table as we can.

“Whether it’s me or somebody else, I’ll make sure that if I’m here I will be pushing them every day.

“We can’t take our foot off the gas. We’ve got to do it for the supporters who travelled in their numbers again today. We’re back at home next week and we need to get three points there.

“I’ve always said if I’m needed I’m available. I’ll always take charge if that’s what is needed but I’m just taking it day by day.”
